Michael Brownstein – 2016 CAFA Honorary Chair

After graduating in commerce from McGill, Michael Brownstein joined Browns Shoes in 1973 and became the president in 1998. He has successfully expanded the chain to its current 55 locations throughout Canada, assuring Browns’ reputation as the leading retailer of fashion footwear.

Michael is the first person outside of Italy to win the prestigious Micam award in Bologna, for his fashion interpretation, his knowledge of craftsmanship, and his success in promoting the Italian shoe industry.

He has brought Browns to the forefront of the 21st century by creating a new chain of stores, B2, which focuses on edgy, street fashion, appealing to a younger generation as well as to trend-conscious consumers. He has also continued the company’s tradition of creating personal relationships with the leading shoe designers of today, who provide Browns with many exclusive styles.

Along with his son, David, as Vice-President of Sales, and his daughter Julia as a Senior Buyer, Michael has assured the growth of Browns with a fourth generation of Brownsteins to guide the company, which celebrated its 75th year in 2015. In keeping with his family’s philanthropic tradition, Michael is also committed to Browns’ philosophy of donating 10% of pre-tax profit to charity each year.
