About The 2018 Self-Nominating Categories

THE SWARKOVSKI EMERGING TALENT AWARD IN FASHION DESIGN AND ACCESSORY DESIGN

These two Awards will be presented to innovative Canadian designers who are emerging as true creative forces in Canadian fashion. Each Emerging Talent Award winner will receive a cash prize of $10,000, mentorship for one year from industry experts in the fields of marketing, Finance, PR, Branding etc. and gain national and international exposure.

Criteria & Submission

  • Participation is open to all Canadian designers with no more than five (5) years of professional industry experience and who have designed a minimum of two (2) collections. Your business must be based in Canada.
  • All entrants must be 18 years of age or older as of November 3, 2017.
  • For the Accessory category, accessory designs include but are not limited to Jewellery, Handbags, Shoes, Hats, Scarves.
  • To be eligible for consideration, designers must submit:
    • A cover letter that serves as an introduction
    • A page on why you should be the 2018 Emerging Talent Award winner
    • A digital copy of your current look book or a portfolio of runway shots*
    • A 2 page business plan summary
    • Members of the 2018 CAFA Nominating Committee will review all of the applicants and then select the finalists
    • Members of the 2018 CAFA Jury will select the winner

*(Please submit high-resolution PDF files at 300 dpi with each file no larger than 20MB )

Date of Submission

Submissions must be received online by 17:00 EST on Friday, November 3, 2017. Late entries will not be accepted. An acknowledgment of receipt of the submission will be sent to all participants. Only candidates officially selected will be notified. The official candidates will be presented online on the website and on site at the gala.

THE SEPHORA FRESH FACE OF THE YEAR AWARD is to be presented to an emerging Canadian model who the industry recognizes as one of Canada’s newest and brightest Fresh Faces.

Criteria & Submission

  • Models must be submitted by their current mother Agent
  • All entrants must be 17 years of age or older as of November 3, 2017
  • At the time of submission models must have at least 1 year modelling experience, but no more than 3
  • Models are with their current mother agency
  • Each agency may only nominate 2 models – Male or Female
  • Each agency to provide 4 polaroids/digitals with name, age, height, and length of time modeling – No branding or agency logos – simple JPGS taken on a White background. Please make sure polaroid’s/ digital’s include one head shot, one full length shot from the front and back in a bathing suit
  • Members of the 2018 CAFA Nominating Committee will review all of the applicants and then select the finalists
  • Members of the 2018 CAFA Jury will select the winner

THE MODEL OF THE YEAR AWARD is to be presented to a Canadian model who has made a significant impact within the Canadian fashion industry.

Criteria & Submission

  • Models must be submitted by their Canadian agency but may also have international representation
  • All entrants must be 17 years of age or older as of November 3, 2017
  • Each agency to nominate their top model of the year. Only 1 model may be nominated – Male or Female
  • Each agency to provide 5 images that best reflect their versatility, scope and range of work. Images can be a mix of editorial, covers, campaigns etc.
  • Each agency to provide model’s biography and must include any special achievements, breakthrough moments or accolades, number and names of special campaigns, covers, runway work etc.

Submissions must be received online by 17:00 EST on Friday, November 3, 2017. Late entries will not be accepted. An acknowledgment of receipt of the submission will be sent to all participants. Only candidates officially selected will be notified. The official candidates will be presented online on the website and on site at the gala.

 

THE SIMONS FASHION DESIGN STUDENT AWARD is to be presented to an exceptional fashion design student who has recently graduated from a Canadian fashion design program. The winner of this Award will receive a cash prize of $5,000, mentorship for one year from industry experts in the fields of marketing, Finance, PR, Branding etc. and gain national and international exposure.

Criteria & Submission

  • Each institution will nominate their top 2 students from the 2017 graduating class for consideration.
  • Entry is open to Universities, Colleges, and private school fashion programs.
  • Only programs that are two years + are eligible. One year programs are not eligible
  • Submissions will be accepted by the institution, not directly from the student.
  • Each submission will include: a cover letter as an introduction, a portfolio of the candidate’s best 5 designs (real produced designs) and 3 sketches yet to be developed, a statement of intent providing details about the brand and planned business goals, a professional or Academic reference letter and a page on why they should be selected as the winner
  • All entrants must be Canadian Citizens and 18 years of age or older as of November 3, 2017
  • Finalists will also be profiled online
  • Members of the 2018 CAFA Nominating Committee will review all of the applicants and then select the finalists
  • Members of the 2018 CAFA Jury will select the winner

Date of Submission

THE FASHION IMPACT AWARD is to be presented to a Canadian designer or brand that has made a significant social or philanthropic impact in the Canadian and/or international community.

Criteria & Submission

  • Applications are to be received by the designer or brand directly
  • Business must be based in Canada
  • Each submission must include: a brief history and description of the initiative/campaign/cause and how it relates to the brand/designer. Please include duration of project and concrete examples of impact and milestones reached. (up to 500 words)
  • A page on what makes the project stand out as unique
  • Any supporting materials i.e. advertisements, digital collateral or any other visuals that you feel would best represent the project/campaign
  • Members of the 2018 CAFA Nominating Committee will review all of the applicants and then select the finalists
  • Members of the 2018 CAFA Jury will select the winner

THE JOE FRESH FASHION INNOVATION AWARD is to be presented to a company that is innovating how we experience, consume or interact with fashion through technology. Applicants will have their applications and businesses reviewed by a separate, esteemed subcommittee of top-tier Canadian investment managers, led by Joe Fresh President, Ian Freedman.
Each of the final nominees/entrepreneurs will have the opportunity to present their companies to a panel of top-tier Canadian institutional investors. The final winner will be chosen by this subcommittee and announced on the night of the CAFA Gala.

Criteria & Submission

  • Applications are to be received directly by the individual or group
  • Business must be 5 years or younger
  • Business must have originated in Canada
  • Each application must include:
  • A corporate presentation
  • A one page description on how the company is pushing the boundaries of innovation (250-500 words)
